First edition of a commentary by Saint Bonaventure on the Sentences of Lombard. This work consists of theological questions posed by Lombard, divided into 4 books: the first considering God and the doctrine of the Trinity; the second concerning the Creation; the third dealing with Christ and the Christian religion; and the fourth comprising questions on religious and moral duties. The present copy is from the earliest of four editions of this important work printed by Anton Koberger. HC 3540*; BMC II 433; BSB-Ink P-387; CIBN B-622; Goff P-486; ISTC ip00486000.

4 volumes (of 5, lacking the Tabula) in 3 (vols. I and II bound together), chancery folio (vols. I-II: 311 x 220mm.; vol III: 302 x 211mm.; vol. III: 292 x 207mm.) 204, 260, 218 and 272 leaves. Blue and red penwork initial opening vol. III, first initial in vol. IV supplied in colours on gilt ground with floral marginal extensions, all vols. rubricated in red or red and blue (minor worming in vols. I-II and III, into letters in first few leaves of vol. I, otherwise marginal at beginning and end; occasional light staining in margins; vol. I with one marginal tear and one small marginal chip). Vols. I and II (bound together): contemporary (Nuremberg?) blind-tooled pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, decorated in blind with tools including double-headed eagle, unicorn, monster, pomegranate, and small rosettes, metal corner- and centre-pieces, 2 clasps and catches (lacking corner pieces on lower board); vol. III: contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, ruled and decorated in blind, two non-uniform clasps, title lettered in manuscript on vellum label on upper board (a few minor wormholes); vol. IV: contemporary Augsburg binding by Kyriss workshop 84, dark brown calf over wooden boards, decorated in blind with hunting roll, artichoke, rosette and other tools (some repairs, lacking clasps, spine rubbed). Provenance: early manuscript notes in margins of all volumes and extensively annotated to endpapers of vol. III – Benedictine Abbey of St Magnus at Fussen, Germany (inscription in first volume) – M.S.P.S. (monogram enclosed within key in vol. III) – J.R. Ritman (Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica, Amsterdam, bookplate; sale Sotheby's, 6 December 2000, lot 31).
