An excellent copy, in original publisher's boards, of one of the most important Brazilian florae: first edition, large-paper coloured issue, one of 62 copies according to the subscribers' list in vol. 1 (amended here in pencil to total 65). Pohl sailed to Brazil in 1817 alongside the Italian botanist Giuseppe Raddi as part of a large scientific expedition sent by Francis I of Austria, and spent four years travelling through Minas Gerais, Goiás, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro, and on at least 30 of the country's rivers. As well as collecting thousands of plant specimens, he also studied the land's minerals and zoology, exploring gold and diamond mines, caves and native villages.
