Authorial presentation draft copy of Thorne's popular science book to Hawking, incorporating Hawking's suggestions. Thorne won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2017, together with Rainer Weiss and Barry C. Barish 'for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves'.

Quarto (280 x 215mm). Revised draft with preface dated 23 July 1992, photostatic printing, numerous illustrations. Original blue artificial leather (spine and joints lightly rubbed). Provenance: authorial presentation inscription on title: 'To Stephen Hawking, With warm wishes, and thanks for your advice & critiques about the previous draft. Kip August 1992'.
