AN ELABRORATE CARVED IVORY BASKET BOWL WITH THE ROYAL WÜRTTEMBERG AND THE RUSSIAN IMPERIAL BLAZONS - Germany, mid 19th century - Oval vine grape and vine leaf tooled openwork basket with filigree rocaille and floral pattern with the two coats of arms of the Russian Imperial House and the House of Württemberg (Blazon alliance of King Karl von Württemberg and his wife Olga, née Grand Duchess of Russia). In an original, leather-covered case and with an enclosed letter on condolence paper: "Her Royal Highness Duchess Wera of Württemberg gave the Baroness von Wächter as a souvenir from the estate of Her Majesty Queen Olga of Württemberg: 1 small ivory basket with the Württemberg and Russian coats of arms." Ivory ca. 137.2 g. Slight age damage, min. rest. and minute damages. - Gift from Wera von Württemberg from the estate of Queen Olga von Württemberg to Freifrau von Wächter. Olga Nikolayevna Romanova (1822-1892), as King Karl's wife the Queen of Württemberg, adopted her niece, Duchess Wera von Württemberg (née Romanowa), since their marriage remained childless. Josephine von Wächter (née Lee) was the wife of August von Wächter, Württembergischer Ambassador to France and Foreign Minister of Württemberg under King Karl. The ancestral seat of the family was in Lautenbach near Neckarsulm in northern Württemberg. The bowl came into the possession of a friendly Württemberg noble family through marriage and inheritance, and it has remained in their palace until this day.
