A Lincoln legal document from a case argued before David Davis. A fine early example of Lincoln's legal work from his years riding the Illinois circuit in a series of pleas and an affidavit submitted as a defense attorney with Joel Seth Post in the matter of Whitley vs. Austin, argued before Judge David Davis. The suit, stemming from Whitley's alleged failure to pay Austin an agreed sum, in an arbitration was dismissed when the two parties apparently settled the dispute. Judge David Davis presided over the Illinois Eighth Circuit from 1848 to 1862 when Lincoln nominated him to the United States Supreme Court. (The Law Practice of Abraham Lincoln, 2nd ed.)
