The first edition of David Roberts’s monumental depictions of ancient and modern Egypt, considered his greatest work which ranks with his publication The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea and Arabia (see previous lot). Inspired by his love of artistic adventure Roberts began to plan his tour of the Middle East in 1838, and in August 1839 departed for Alexandria, spending the remainder of that year in Cairo and visiting the major tombs and sites of Egypt. 3 volumes, folio (606 x 445mm), 3 pictorial titles, 61 plates and 60 half-page illustrations, all tinted lithographs by Louis Haghe after David Roberts, paper guards, engraved map at end of volume 3 ‘to illustrate the sketches of David Roberts, Esq., R.A. in Egypt and Nubia. 1849’ (light scattered spotting and occasional dust-stains). Contemporary green half morocco by J. Leighton, upper covers stamped in gilt ‘Egypt & Nubia’ and with the volume number. Provenance: Charles Canning ,1st Earl Canning (1812-1862; armorial bookplate in each volume).
