RODDY DOYLE (b.1958)
The Van. London: Martin Secker & Warburg, 1991.
A heavily annotated first edition signed on the title by the author, with nearly all of the pages annotated in black ink, comprising 5732 words across 285 pages. The Van is Booker Prize-winning author Roddy Doyle’s touching comedy about everyday Irish life in Barrytown, north Dublin, and the lives of the Rabbitte family. Facing unemployment, Jimmy Rabbitte Sr bands together with his friend, Bimbo, to run a fish and chip van – the novel explores the subsequent strains on their friendship. Doyle’s copious notes pay close attention to the minutiae of the text, providing private reflections from a distance of some 30 years since the novel’s publication. They reveal the inspiration for important episodes in the novel, including his experiences with unemployment in the 1980s and struggles with jobhunting. The annotations are extremely extensive and detailed, remarking on a wide range of matters including the qualities of his characters and offering explanations for language choices such as the more obscure ‘Dublinese’ phrases. The Van was adapted into a film of the same name in 1996.

Octavo. Original blue cloth, black lettering to the spine, pictorial dust jacket (minor wear at corners).
