ROSCOE, William (1753-1831)

Monandrian Plants of the order Scitamineae, chiefly drawn from living specimens in the Botanic Garden at Liverpool. Liverpool: George Smith, [1824-] 1828.

First edition of Roscoe's impressive work, with fine hand-coloured plates, one of only 150 copies. Arranged according to the Linnean system, Roscoe's descriptions and observations are accompanied by attractive grand-scale colour plates, and presents a new arrangement of the plants of the monandrian class. Great Flower Books (1990) p.133; Nissen BBI 1677; Stafleu and Cowan 9505.

Large folio (544 x 420mm). 2 section titles, 112 hand-coloured lithographic plates by Thomas Allport, Rebecca Miller, Margaret Roscoe, Mrs J. Dixon, Ellen Yates, Emily Fletcher and Mary Waln, under the direction of G. Graves (first few leaves creased and dogeared at lower corner with one small marginal chip, some occasional faint spotting and offsetting, plates 33-34 heavily spotted, a couple of plates trimmed close just touching image, otherwise a clean, crisp copy). Later 19th-century olive-green morocco by J. Law of Liverpool, covers panelled with a gilt double- and a black single-fillet, enclosing a panel of floral rolls, clusters of volutes, stars, dots and floral devices at corners and along the outside centres of the inner panel which is framed by a triple fillet and small swagged roll, very wide gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (very worn and scraped, lacking backstrip, upper cover detached).
