Post lot text SANTIAGO RUSIÑOL Y PRATS, CAMPANARS: EVENING LIGHT, GIRONA, OIL ON CANVAS, UNLINED, SIGNEDBorn in Barcelona in 1861, Santiago Rusiñol (1861-1931) grows up in a family of wealthy textile industrialists. Renouncing his obligation to work in the family mill, Rusiñol opts for an artistic path and studies to become a painter. The lyricism of his style can be traced back to his Parisian period at the beginning of the 1890’s. Living in Montmartre in a community of Spanish artists with Ramon Casas (1866-1932) and Ignacio Zuloaga y Zabaleta (1870-1945), he quickly turns to the modernist movement and becomes close to a group of artists known as ‘XX’, which includes Fernand Khnopff (1858-1921) and James Ensor (1860-1949). This group progressively becomes a converging point for both modernist and symbolist artists, poets and writers, such as James Abbott Whistler (1834-1903), who exerted a great influence on the Spanish artist. Upon his return to Spain, Rusiñol develops his unique style, which he expresses through his poetic depictions of landscapes and gardens rendered using an amplified and vibrant palette.Rusiñol was greatly inspired by the urban landscape of Gerona, which he discovered over the course of several trips between 1908 and 1929. There, he would paint with his friend Pepet Gitano, waiting for the perfect moment to capture the diffusion of light through the city’s architecture, as we can see here with the evening light which poignantly illuminates the city’s Romanesque cathedral tower, named after Charlemagne, located on the city’s highest point. The lack of human presence in the foreground brings a sense of calm and tranquility to the city represented here. We would like to thank Mercedes Palau-Ribes for her help in the writing of this catalogue entry.
