AN ELABORATE CARVED WALNUT LONGCASE CLOCK - Court Clockmaker (Johann) Paul(l)us Graf(f), Munich, 3rd quarter of 18th century - Signed on the dial: Paulus Graf in München. Two-piece carved wood case. Bronze dial with fire-gilt ciffer ring, Roman numerals, Arabic minutes, date, depiction of the zodiac signs, small second, moon phase, "eye turner" and finely carved iron hands. Massive lever movement with 1/4-hour striking on two bells and circa 4 weeks running time. Weight driven and spring suspension of the pendulum. Rest., additions, damages due to age. Movement not checked - Private Collection Baden-Wurttemberg Johann Paul(l)us Graf(f) came from Augsburg to Munich in 1756. As Matthias Golling's successor, he became Court Clockmaker under Max III Joseph von Bayern (1745-1777) in 1772 and guild master in 1781. Lit. Josef M.
