[AUSTEN, Jane (1775-1817)]. Sense and Sensibility. London: for the author by C. Roworth and published by T. Egerton, 1813.

Second edition of Jane Austen’s first published novel, rare in original boards. Gilson notes that the first edition of Sense and Sensibility was sold out by July 1813, and on 25 September 1813 Austen wrote to her brother, "There is to be a 2d Edition of S.& S. Egerton advises it." The text is believed to have been revised by the author; there are some major differences and many minor changes. Chapman notes an example of the former on page 66, where "a sentence was deleted in the interests of propriety" around Lady Middleton's reference to the ward she believes to be Colonel Brandon's child. The offending sentence in the first edition was as follows: "Lady Middleton's delicacy was shocked; and in order to banish so improper a subject as the mention of a natural daughter, she actually took the trouble of saying something herself about the weather." James Kinsley suggests that the new errors are so numerous "that the corrections must have been made only on a copy of [the first edition] and not also on a proof for [the second edition]." The second edition was first advertised in The Star No.8316, Friday 29 October 1813, as published on that day, price 18s.in boards (the advertisement mentions also the second edition of Pride and Prejudice). It clearly did not sell out immediately; Egerton mentioned it as available in his advertisements as late as 1815. Gilson A2.

Three volumes, 12mo (185 x 105mm). Half-titles, 4 pp. ad for Sherwood, Neely, and Jones at rear of vol. 3. Uncut. (Some generally minor spotting/staining internally; vol. 3 with light stain at upper gutter extending through last third; some gatherings loosely sewn.) Original paper-covered boards (soiled, worn; vol 1 with front board detached, some loss of paper at foot of spine, lacking spine label; vol. 3 lower board detached). Custom quarter-morocco slipcase.
