SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS, P.R.A. (1723-1792), SKETCH FOR THE PORTRAIT OF LADY STANHOPE, OIL ON BOARD
This delicate sketch is related to the Portrait of Elizabeth Falconer, Mrs. Stanhope, in a Contemplative Pose, sold at Christie’s in London in 2015 (8 December 2015, lot 41). Both paintings date from 1786, a period of great productivity for the artist, who was then the most sought-after portraitist in England.
The sitter, Elizabeth Falconer, married in 1783 the Honorable Henry Fitzroy Stanhope (1754-1828), captain in the 1st Regiment of Foot and second son of William Stanhope (1717-1779), Earl of Petersham. She was celebrated for her beauty and known for her involvement in the artistic and literary circles of London society. As a close friend of Lady Elizabeth Craven (1750-1828), amateur playwright and woman of letters, she is said to have known James Boswell (1740-1795) and Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), as well as Horace Walpole (1717-1797), who had assisted in publishing some of Lady Craven’s early works.
Lady Stanhope is depicted seated, her head resting on her left hand and her right arm placed on the back of a chair. Behind her, a large red curtain is drawn aside to reveal a stone balustrade and a landscape beyond. Although she is tastefully dressed, her clothing and hairstyle have been simplified compared to the fashions of the late eighteenth century. This type of pose, one of contemplation, appears to have been a popular choice for portraits of young women at the end of the century. The most famous example of this motif is found in the series of Attitudes created for Emma, Lady Hamilton (1765-1815), recorded in a sequence of engravings and drawings by George Romney (1734-1802).
The sitter’s pose is almost directly inspired by Sir Joshua Reynolds’s (1723-1792) celebrated Mrs. Siddons as the Tragic Muse (Huntington Library, San Marino, inv. 21.2), painted in 1784. Reynolds is said to have based his composition on the figure of Isaiah from Michelangelo’s (1475-1564) Sistine Chapel ceiling, though Lady Stanhope’s pose is equally reminiscent of Guido Reni’s (1575-1642) Penitent Magdalene (Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica, Rome), which he may have known through a print, given the reversed composition.
