Lot 220 | SOLVYNS, Frans Baltasar
Valeur estimée
€ 1 000 – 1 500
SOLVYNS, Frans Baltasar (1760-1824) - The costume of Hindostan. London: W. Bulmer per Edward Orme, 1804.

Eugène Rose de Beauharnais' copy of the first edition published in book form of Solvyns' superb record of the people of Bengal, based on drawings made when the artist was resident in Calcutta between 1791 and 1803. The work was first published in parts with an undated title page, and was followed by editions in 1804 (as here) and 1807. The popularity of the images however ensured that the work stayed in print for many years.

Folio (381 x 275mm). Text in English and French, 60 hand-coloured engraved plates by Scott or Vivares after Solvyns (lacking some tissue papers, some light soiling and minor spotting). Contemporary half red leather stamped in gilt with the initials "EA" of Eugene de Beauharnias and his wife Amelie of Bavari under Royal Crown (extremities rubbed, head of spine chipped). Provenance: Eugène Rose de Beauharnais (1781-1824), French general in the Napoleonic Wars and Viceroy of Italy, son of Josephine Tascher de la Pagerie, later wife of Napoleon and Empress of the French. Eugene de Beauharnais married Princess Augusta Amelia of Bavaria (1788-1851), daughter of Maximilian I of Bavaria (cypher on binding) - de Savotsch (bookplate).
