SYMONDS, John Addington (1840–1893)

Wine, Women, and Song: Mediæval Latin Students' Songs Now First Translated into English Verse. London: Chatto & Windus, 1884.

First edition in an exceptional contemporary jewelled and inlayed binding by De Sauty. A fine example of an early binding by De Sauty who had set up on his own in London after working as a finisher with Rivière. De Sauty’s work ‘is of considerable merit. His inlays are distinguished for the taste shown in the association of colours, and his finishing has some of the brilliant qualities of the French school, seen particularly in the finely studded tooling of which he seems particularly fond.’ Sarah Prideaux “Modern Bookbinding”. See also Tidcombe, ‘The Mysterious Mr. De Sauty’ in ‘For the Love of the Binding. Studies in Bookbinding History Presented to Mirjam Foot’ (2000), pp. 329-36.

Duodecimo (167mm x 104mm). Contemporary dark green morocco, covers finely worked to an all over design of gilt scrolled foliage and flowers, circular sunken panels at centre, above and below, with gilt pointillé borders, inlayed in light green morocco with black rope work borders, red glass cabochons at centres, spine with five raised bands richly gilt in compartments, edges and inner dentelles gilt ruled, doublures of dark green morocco, richly gilt with border of gilt peacock feathers with pointillé and red morocco inlays, three finely gilt tooled circles mirroring covers at centre, red morocco end leaves with gilt ruled borders, gilt edges; later green Morocco backed folding box.
