Further details

THÉODORE CHASSÉRIAU, PORTRAIT OF BARONNE DE BUUS D’HOLLEBÈKE, BORN MAREEL, MOTHER-IN-LAW OF THE VICOMTE DE RANCHICOURT, GRAPHITE
From the pupil and faithful spiritual descendant of Jean-Dominique Ingres, this highly finished portrait, executed in graphite with great meticulousness, is very similar to his master's famous drawn portraits. Louis-Antoine Prat wrote that it was ‘a genre in which Chassériau excelled as much as his master’ (op. cit., 1989, p. 5). This one dates from 1837, the year in which the artist stayed with his friend Oscar de Ranchicourt at the family castle in the Nord Pas de Calais region. While there, he painted portraits of several members of the family, including the present drawing (Chassériau. Correspondance oubliée, Paris, 2014, edited by J.-B. Nouvion, p. 59, no. 53). The Baroness of Hollebèke depicted here is none other than the mother-in-law of the Comte de Ranchicourt. Chassériau also painted a portrait of her husband during this period, which was presented for sale in 2016 (see provenance). At the time this portrait was painted, in 1837, while his master was head of the Académie de France in Rome, Théodore Chassériau was practising his art in Paris and exhibited not less than six paintings at the Salon that same year, four of which were portraits. The psychological truth of the model, the precision of the details and in particular the rendering of the facial features and the hair show that at the age of eighteen, Chassériau had already mastered the art of portrait drawing in the manner of his master.
