The African Queen

C. S. Forester

FORESTER, C. S. (1899-1966). The African Queen. London & Toronto: William Heinemann Ltd, 1935.

Rare first edition in the dust-jacket, signed and further inscribed by the author: 'To Ingle Barr, twenty two years after first signing this book. C. S. Forester April 1957'. We are unable to trace any copy in the dust-jacket in auction records. Forester's novel follows Charlie Allnut, a gin-drinking river trader, and Rose Sayer, a prim missionary, as they endure adventure and each other while sailing down a river in Central Africa aboard Allnut's unremarkable boat called The African Queen. The novel was later adapted into the beloved 1951 film of the same title, starring Humphrey Bogart as Charlie Allnut and Katherine Hepburn as Rose Sayer.

Octavo. (One small stain.) Original brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt (corners lightly bumped and tail and headcap lightly bruised); original dust-jacket printed in blue, white and black (expertly restored, covers and edges lightly soiled). Provenance: Ingle Barr (authorial presentation inscription to fly title and bookplate to front pastedown).
