The British landing at Boston Habor

Paul Revere, 1769

REVERE, PAUL (1735-1818, artist). Edes & Gill's North-American Almanack, and Massachusetts Register for the Year 1770. Boston: sold by Edes and Gill in Queen Street and T. & J. Fleet at the Heart and Crown in Cornhill, 1770 [but 1769?].

Rare early view of Boston Harbor by Paul Revere. Revere's more famous large-scale engraving of the British landing at Boston harbor would appear in April of 1770; the metal cut version present here is part of a scarce almanac documenting the cultural milieu of Boston in the months leading up the Boston Massacre. This is Revere's only metal cut signed in the plate, and this copy is the only one recorded at auction by RBH and ABPC. Sabin 21833; Evans 11479 (erroneously attributed to Samuel Stearns); Drake 3189; Brigham, Paul Revere's Engravings p. 199.

12mo (165 x 96mm). 29 leaves (of 30, E3 present in facsimile). Metal cut of British troops landing at Boston Harbor by Revere on front of self-wrapper (repairs around the edges of wood engraving with some losses to printed caption, areas of repair and reinforcement throughout, mostly around edges but sometimes affecting printed area). Original self-wrapper (rebacked). Custom chemise and slipcase.
