Extra-illustrated copy, with George III document. The Hoe-Schiff set. Boswell's great biography was published 16 May, 1791 and achieved immediate critical acclaim. It has not been out of print since. A unique set extra-illustrated with engraved plates relating to events and places in Johnson’s life, plus one 1760 letter patent signed by George III appointing Sir John Peck (1688/89–1771) to Provost Marshall of Gibraltar.
Four volumes, large octavo (254 × 150mm). Extra-illustrated with numerous early engraved plates and a 1760 letter patent signed by George III (“George R.”) (occasional light spotting, some leaves toned). Contemporary crushed red morocco by Stikeman & Co., gold-tooled covers and spine, marbled endleaves (rebacked, rubbed at extremities). Provenance: Robert Hoe (1839–1909; morocco bookplate) – Mortimer L. Schiff (1877–1932; morocco bookplate).
