The Little Sister

Raymond Chandler

CHANDLER, Raymond (1888-1959). The Little Sister. London: Hamish Hamilton, 1949. [With:] – The Little Sister. New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1949.

The author’s file copies of the first UK and first US edition of Chandler’s fifth Marlowe novel, the first UK edition with pencil corrections by the publisher. Because of troubles finding a new US publisher, The Little Sister came out in England nearly three months before the US edition. Chandler struggled writing The Little Sister for several years, partly against the backdrop of his disenchantment with Hollywood and the failing health of his wife Cissy. It was adapted for film in 1969, Marlowe, starring James Garner. Bruccoli A.8.1 and A8.2.a (giving precedence to the orange cloth binding as here).

2 volumes, octavo. UK edition: (light spotting at edges occasionally onto page). Original reddish-orange cloth, spine lettered in gilt, original pictorial dust-jacket by C.W.B. (flyleaves darkened, minor abrasions and tiny nicks on jacket). US edition: original orange cloth stamped and titled in blue, original pictorial dust-jacket designed by Boris Artzybasheff (minor short tears at jacket extremities); housed together in modern half red morocco box. Provenance: author’s copies (flyleaf of each volume stamped with Chandler’s ownership stamp with his name and La Jolla address, stamped date of June 6 1949 [UK] / Sep 12 1949 [US], ’File copy’ written in red or blue – [sold Sotheby’s NY, 13 Dec. 2011, lots 118, 119].
