David Stone MARTIN (1913-1992).

Two Clarinets, c.1956. Gouache on paper, signed ‘D.S.M.’, 357 x 115 mm; accompanied by a portfolio of six lithograph prints, the portfolio cover displaying similar clarinet imagery.

Best known as a prolific and influential designer of jazz album covers – he designed over 400 of them – David Stone Martin was producer Norman Granz’ designer of choice, with Martin creating almost all the covers for his Asch, Clef and Jazz at the Philharmonic labels through the 1940's and 1950's. ‘His album portraits, mostly done in distinctive heavy black-ink lines, included likenesses of Stan Getz, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Art Tatum, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Jelly Roll Morton and Duke Ellington. “He was essentially the first to develop an independent, serious image of jazz" and provided "an intimate insight into the music and life of jazz people," said Martina Schmitz, an art historian and musician who once assembled an exhibition of his work at Lincoln Center.’ New York Times obituary.
