Lot 103 | Two letters
FARADAY, Michael (1791-1867). Autograph letter signed ("M. Faraday") to British botanist and physician Philip Burnard Ayres, Royal Institution [London], 21 January 1851.

Two pages, 110 x 80mm.

Making an anonymous contribution to support an ailing scientist "Dr. Grant". While he "grieves for Dr. Grant's difficulties," Faraday first denies Ayers's request to place his name directly with the cause, stating: "as a matter of principle I have always refused...". Faraday then encloses a check for 5 pounds, though adds: "I must beg you not to put my name to the contribution...if anything be necessary only [add] the letters M.F.".

[With:] FALCONER, Hugh (1808-1865). Autograph letter signed ("H. Falconer") to Secretary of the Royal Institution Reverend John Barlow, Strand [London], 29 January, n.y, but 1843 to 1860. One page, 110 x 80mm. Falconer requests a ticket to admission to one of Faraday's lectures at the Royal Institution. Reverend John Barlow served as the Secretary of the Institution from 1843 to 1860, where he maintained a close friendship with Michael Faraday and took over many of his administrative duties after his nervous breakdown in 1839.
