JAZZ IN BRITAIN

Two albums containing approximately 250 unpublished candid photographs of leading American and UK jazz musicians in Britain, 1957-87, many signed, taken by amateur photographer Martin Noble at jazz gigs in London from the late 1950s to the 80s, including: sixteen shots of Dizzy Gillespie, of which seven are signed, taken during Jazz At The Philharmonic shows in 1958 and 1961; 11 images of Count Basie and his Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall and the Flamingo Club in 1957, with a small snapshot signed by Basie surrounded by clipped signatures of ten band members, and signed snapshots of individual band members; 11 photos of the Modern Jazz Quartet at the Royal Festival Hall in 1961, two of which are signed; 3 shots of John Coltrane during the 1961 Jazz At The Philharmonic tour; a sequence of 45 images of the Dave Brubeck Quartet from 1961-62 with signatures of all four members; and 14 of Ella Fitzgerald pictured with various accompanists in 1960, together with four clipped signatures. Additional musicians featured include Sonny Stitt, Stan Getz, Lou Levy, Gus Johnson, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Roy Eldridge, Shelly Manne and Stan Kenton, amongst others.

Two volumes folio, each 315 x 360 mm. Approximately 250 photographs in various formats ranging from 198 x 208 mm to 102 x 98 mm, the majority gelatin silver prints with a few chromogenic prints, the photographs mounted on 30 leaves with self-adhesive film.

[With:] an album containing approximately 46 unpublished candid photographs of British big band leaders and jazz musicians, late 1930s to early 1950s, of which many are signed, the images include Leslie “Jiver” Hutchinson playing trumpet, 1940s, a teenage Ray Cooper playing drums, and Vic Ash playing the clarinet. Landscape quarto (265 x 205 mm). Gelatin silver prints, various formats, the majority 90 x 140 mm.
