UBERTINUS de Casali (1259-c.1330)

Arbor vitae crucifixae Jesu Christi. Venice: Andreas de Bonetis, 12 March 1485.

First edition. As a leader of the strict Franciscan Spirituals movement, Ubertino of Casale devotes this, his principal work, to propounding the poverty of Christ, criticising those (including popes) who adapt a looser interpretation of the Rule of St. Francis. The work was highly influential; Ubertino appears in Dante’s Divine Comedy and, more recently, in Eco’s The Name of the Rose. HC *4551; BMC V, 361; CIBN U-19; Bod-inc U-008; Goff U-55; ISTC iu00055000.

Chancery folio (278 x 190mm). 250 leaves (occasional spotting or small stain, light marginal dampstain in quires n-o, tiny hole in last leaf). 18th-century calf-backed vellum boards, gilt spine (light wear at spine, a few small wormholes at foot). Provenance: occasional contemporary annotations (sometimes trimmed) – Vals, Jesuit Seminary library (stamp) – A and P woodblock stamps.
