Valerius Maximus's Facta et dicta memorabilia

Philippus Pincius, 1494

VALERIUS MAXIMUS, Gaius (fl. 30 CE). Facta et dicta memorabilia. With commentary of Oliverius Arzignanensis. Venice: [Philippus Pincius,] 16 July 1494.

Scarce incunable edition of a classic of Silver Age Latin—the Kloss copy in a contemporary binding. Popular throughout antiquity and the Middle Ages, this anthology provides a valuable glimpse into Roman life and learning during the reign of Tiberius. Only one other copy of this edition is recorded by RBH, from the 1970s. Bod-inc V-023; Goff V41; BMC V 496; BSB-Ink V-23; ISTC iv00041000.

Chancery folio (309 x 211mm). 210 leaves. Woodcut initials (some worming in text, worse at ends, some leaves toned). Contemporary half pigskin over wooden boards, ink title on front board, catchplates, vellum manuscript reused as quire guards, later ink title on spine (worming, hinges repaired and endpapers renewed, lacking straps). Provenance: considerable annotations, both interlinear and marginal, in various hands; a few inscriptions on the title page from different periods, "A Von Albersdorff," "Rupert Hohenfelder" – Georg Kloss, 1787-1854 (bookplate, his sale, Sotheby's, 7 May 1835, lot 3802) – modern library stamp on title page.
