VALLA, Giorgio (1447-1500)
De expetendis et fugiendis rebus opus. Venice: Aldus Manutius for Giampietro Valla, December 1501.
The only Aldine production in this large format: a crisp copy of the first edition of an encyclopaedic compilation of Valla which was posthumously published and edited by his adopted son. The work is a compendium of classical and contemporary thought in several branches of learning, including mathematics, medicine, astronomy, geometry, poetics and dialectics, illustrated with a large number of woodcut and typographic diagrams. Valla was professor of classical languages at Venice, specialised in Greek scientific literature, and formed a splendid library, which was acquired by Alberto Pio. According to Lowry (p. 223), Aldus agreed to print this massive work, because Valla had done much to introduce him to Venetian high society. Adams V-147; Isaac 12771; Laurenziana 50; Renouard Alde, 30:8; Sansoviniana 50; UCLA 48; Edit16 46533; USTC 861868.

2 volumes bound in one, super-royal folio (404 x 269mm). Roman type. Two- to twelve-line initial spaces with guide letters, volume 1 with many woodcut and typographic diagrams and illustrations in the text (preliminary leaf *6 with repaired tear at lower corner into blank margin (not affecting text), title and final leaf slightly browned). 17th-century calf, double gilt filet rule border to sides, spine in compartments with raised bands gilt (binding somewhat worn). Provenance: Albert J. Chalmers (1870-1920, British colonial physician who was a research pioneer in tropical medicine; armorial bookplate, presented by Mrs. A.J. Chalmers in 1920 to:) — Royal Society of Medicine (engraved gift bookplate; ink library stamp at head of title).
