VASI, Giuseppe (1710-1782) - Delle magnificenze di Roma antica e moderna: solo Libro primo che contiene le porte e mura di Roma dedicate alla Sacra Real Maestà di Carlo infante di Spagna re delle Due Sicilie. A good copy of the first book of Giuseppe Vasi's masterpiece. Engraver and architect, master of Giovan Battista Piranesi, his views are an important and exhaustive source to learn about the architecture and customs of 18th-century Rome. In the present copy 20 views dedicated to the River Tevere and its surroundings are also bound and preceded by a dedicated frontispiece.

Oblong 4to (270 x 394mm). First work with engraved vignette on title, dedication dated 1744, engraved frontispiece, large engraved illustrations, plates numbered 1-20, with a map of Rome bound at end together with an index of the plates followed by an engraved dedication to Prince Torjano. Second work with engraved title and 19 plates numbered 2-19 (some staining to plates 14-16 of the second work, previous and subsequent plates with minor staining, occasional light foxing and staining throughout, some creasing including on title). Contemporary mottled calf, gilt frames on covers, gilt spine and inlays, red edges and marbled endpapers (light rubbing, weak joints). The present issue, dedicated to the Infante of Spain is without half-title. Provenance: armorial bookplate with the motto "Re que Diou".
