Votive Masses against the Saracens
The Common of Saints and Votive Masses from a Missal in Latin, decorated manuscript on vellum [Spain (or possibly Italy), 14th century].
A substantial portion of a Missal, including votive masses against the Saracens and for the recovery of the Holy Land.

c.220 × 150mm. 29 leaves (three consecutive gatherings, of 8, 12, and 8 leaves) foliated in modern pencil on rectos 1–29 and in medieval red ink on versos ccx–ccxxxviii, omitting ccxxxv, written with 25 lines per page in two sizes, large and small initials in red with purple penwork flourishing (margins somewhat water-damaged, causing some washing of added marginal texts, the lower blank margin of f.23 excised).

(1) Alan Thomas, bookseller of Bournemouth and London, with his price-code ‘PP/-/-’ (£11) in pencil on f.1v.
(2) Colker MS 46, acquired in 1964 from the above.

Content:
Common of Saints, starting in the mass for Apostles, f.1, followed by Evangelists, martyrs, with variants for different liturgical seasons, and confessors; masses for a burial, f.19, a dead bishop, priest, and other dead people including brothers, friends, and benefactors, a father and mother, with variants for different liturgical seasons; for St Michael and all archangels, f.24v, and votive masses against the enemies of the church, for various kinds of friends (e.g. ‘pro navigante amico’), peace, a congregation, for rain, against pestilence, and ending in one ‘Contra sarracenos’. Some contemporary and later masses were added in upper and lower margins, e.g. for the recapture of the Holy Land (‘Missa devota ad recuperandam sanctam terram Iherusalem’, ff.24v–25.
