A FINE ANTIQUE-STYLE DIAMOND AND EMERALD SET GOLD TIARA WITH FINE GRANULATION - Munich, 1922 circa Johann Michael Wilm (1885 – 1963) - Yellow gold with fine tendril-shaped granulation work, at least 750/000 yellow gold set with 1 brilliant old-cut diamond ca. 0.12ct TW/SI and 1 emerald ca. 0.55 ct of very fine colour. Company's mark and Munich town mark. Weight ca. 34,1 g. (Display piece ca. 17 x 2 cm) - German Private Collection, according to the owner, acquired directly from Juwelier Wilm in Munich in 1922 on the occasion of a wedding. Johann Michael Wilm was born in Dorfen in 1885. First he completed an training as a goldsmith with his father. From 1908 to 1912 his apprenticeship took him to Kitzbühl, Bad Tölz and finally to New York. He passed his master's examination and from 1912 to 1914 ran his brother Joseph Wilm's workshop in Berlin. In 1919 he founded his own workshop in Munich. Inspired by Marc Rosenberg, he made his first attempts to learn the Etruscan technique of granulation. Between 1920 and 1922 he made impressive goldsmith work using this lost technique. Along with Elisabeth Treskow, he is one of the most important German goldsmiths who mastered the art of granulation. The present diadem in the shape of a Greek temple pediment is a wonderful example of this high level of craftsmanship and represents a true masterpiece.
