Dedicated to Yuyuan
NOTE:
The recipient refers to Qiu Yuyuan (1905–1968), an overseas Chinese in Malaysia, born in the city of Perak. He was engaged in tin mining business and had a keen interest in Chinese culture, with a particular admiration for Zhao Shao’ang’s painting artistry. In 1952, during the artist’s visit to Southeast Asia, Zhao held touring exhibitions in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, and Penang, which were highly popular among the local populace and achieved great success. Mr. Qiu specifically commission several pieces of calligraphy and paintings from the artist. This piece was created by the artist at the end of 1952 during his stay in Ipoh. Zhao seldom painted landscapes, yet those presented to Mr. Qiu were all of this theme, possibly indicating the patron’s preference.
