Further details

SPANISH SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY, TOLEDO (?), 1603, THE CRUCIFIXION OF SAINT PETER AND THE BEHEADING OF SAINT PAUL, BODYCOLOUR, HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD

This ornate initial dated 1603 can be attributed to a Spanish illuminator active in Toledo, influenced by the paintings of Juan Correa de Vivar (circa 1510-1566), to whom are attributed some of the miniatures in the breviary of Charles V at the Escorial, and the altarpiece in the church of Almonacid de Zorita in the province of Guadalajara, a collaboration with Alonso de Covarrubias, and destroyed during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939. The initial ‘T’ opens the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29: ‘Tu es Petrus’ (you are Petrus).
The style of this miniature, with its colourful tone and animated figures, is undoubtedly strongly influenced by Raphael and the Mannerism of his successors, and can be compared with antiphonaries from Córdoba, Granada and Toledo (D. Bordona, Manuscritos con pinturas, I, Madrid, 1933, nos. 216, 259; II, nos. 1732, 1841). As for the sheet’s provenance, the eight-line text on the back of the illumination mentions a convent: ‘[...] Patri Magis[ter] [...]ris Didaci de Miranda prio[...] us conventus beatae Virgin[is M]ariae de la Cabeza in civitate [...]a inscriptus anno domini 1603’. This may be Santa María de la Cabeza in Granada, the one in Ávila, or more probably the one in Andújar. The name ‘Didaci/us de Miranda' appears in Sacrae Rotae Romanae Decisiones (1622), and he was apparently a member of the Hieronymite order.
