BY THOMAS CHIPPENDALE, CIRCA 1772

Each with an oval cartouche-shaped upholstered back within a molded frame carved at the crest with an anthemion, the shaped padded arms with over-scrolled molded hand-holds adorned with beaded and leaf-carved ornament, the back, seat, and arms covered in white silk with a large brocaded silver leaf pattern, English, Spitalfields, circa 1740, supported on foliate headed turned legs with gadrooned feet, with printed and inscribed Ann and Gordon Getty Collection inventory label

37 1/4 in. (94.6 cm.) high, 26 1/2 in. (66.7 cm.) wide, 19 in. (48.3 cm.) deep





Provenance

Commissioned by David Garrick, circa 1772, as part of the suite supplied by Chippendale for the Saloon at No. 5, Royal Adelphi Terrace, London.

Anonymous sale; Hall Fine Art Auctions, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, 3 September 1993, lot 206.

Acquired from James Hepworth by Ann and Gordon Getty in 1993.

The antique upholstery acquired from Spink & Son Ltd., London, by Ann and Gordon Getty in 1995.
