ALASTAIR [pseudonym of Hans Henning von Voigt (1887-1969)].
Fifty Drawings. With an Introduction by Carl Van Vechten. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1925.
One of a limited edition of 1025 copies, showcasing the artist’s distinctive style as influenced by the Art Nouveau movement and the works of Aubrey Beardsley. Hans-Henning von Voigt, known by his pseudonym Alastair, was a German artist, composer, dancer, mime, poet, singer, and translator. Fifty Drawings solidified his reputation as a leading illustrator of his time. He also illustrated several of Oscar Wilde's works, including the 1920 edition of The Sphinx and Salome in 1922. Alastair's work on Wilde's texts is celebrated for its intricate detail and its ability to evoke the decadent spirit of Wilde's prose.

4to (320 x 250mm). 50 collotype illustrations, several in colour, after drawings by Alastair, captions printed in red on tissue-guards (minor stain on pl.40). Publisher's cloth-backed boards over gold-dotted black boards, lettered along spine, Brentano’s booksellers label on rear pastedown, loosely inserted printed publisher’s advertisement (extremities lightly rubbed, spine lettering faded, upper hinge cracked but holding); in a custom modern two-quarter morocco box. Provenance: Joan Whitney (bookplate) – Barry Humphries (1934-2023; bookplate).
