ALFONSO XI (1311-1350, King of Castile and Leon) – ARGOTE DE MOLINA, Gonzalo (1548-1596, editor)
Libro, de la Monteria que mando escrevir el muy alto y muy poderoso Rey Don Alonso de Castilla, y de Leon, ultimo deste nombre. Seville: Andrea Pescioni, 1582
The earliest Spanish book on the chase, and the first book to speak of and illustrate hunting in the Americas. Written in circa 1342, it has been traditionally attributed to Alfonso XI, King of Castile and Leon. The editor, Argote de Molina, added to the medieval work new chapters about hunting in Asia as well as in the Spanish-American colonies. The resultant publication not only illustrates the traditional European pursuits of boar and bear hunting, but also the hunting of leopards and lions in the orient, as well as tiger hunting in Mexico and ostrich hunting in Peru; one of the woodcuts shows a bullfight. Harting describes the work as of 'extreme rarity' and Souhart likewise calls it 'fort rare'. Gutierrez de la Vega 115; Harting 242; Palau 16167; Schwerdt I, 44; Souhart 24; Streeter 4080.

Small folio (279 x 191mm). Woodcut royal arms on title, 35 woodcut illustrations, some repeated, ornamental initials, with the blank M6, printer's device at end on final blank (lower blank corner of title repaired, leaf (?)6 with small marginal hole repaired, faint dampstain to lower corner throughout, sometimes heavy, occasional browning and spotting, a few leaves more heavily affected, final leaf with repairs in blank fore-margin). Modern mottled sheep, Spanish-style, gilt spine with red morocco gilt lettering piece, marbled endpapers, red edges (extremities faintly rubbed).
