AN APPLE MACINTOSH ‘PICASSO’ DEALER SIGN
APPLE COMPUTER INC., 1984
Illuminated etched glass sign on plastic base.

An icon of the Macintosh era.

The Apple Macintosh 'Picasso' Dealer Sign, produced in the mid-1980s, was a distinctive promotional item used by Apple dealers to showcase the Macintosh computers. Shaped like a stylized apple with a bite taken out, reminiscent of the Apple logo, the 'Picasso' sign featured colorful graphics and illuminated elements that made it stand out in retail environments. These signs were not only eye-catching but also symbolized Apple's innovative and artistic approach to computing, reflecting the Macintosh's graphical capabilities and user-friendly design.

Susan Kare (b.1954) was the artist/designer behind the core graphics of the original Macintosh, including its marketing material. With its many typefaces and icons (the smiling Macintosh, the CTRL key symbol, the trashcan), her graphics were truly a visual language that defined the identity of Macintosh and of Apple's pioneering GUI computing. The Pablo Picasso reference is telling in itself. Kare was trained as a fine artist and had no technological or computing experience before joining Apple in 1982. She was precisely the type of hip, creative professional that became the target audience for the Mac. The 'Picasso' Dealer Sign became a sought-after collector's item, representing an era when Apple was revolutionizing personal computing with its iconic Macintosh lineup.
