AN ELIZABETH I SILVER-GILT CUP AND COVER
MAKER'S MARK A COVERED CUP, POSSIBLY FOR WILLIAM DERHAM, LONDON, 1561
On domed circular dentilated base chased above with a band of fruit, foliage and masks amid strapwork on a pounced ground, with drum-form pedestal above, decorated with a die-rolled band of foliage and chased above with a band of running fruit, the stem formed of a vase-shaped knop engraved with basket-weave and applied with three maidenheads between openwork scrolls, chased above with further fruit and with cylindrical stem, the thistle shaped bowl with lobed lower body, applied with molded midrib above a band of scrolling arabesques repeated at upper rim, further engraved above midrib with a slightly later presentation inscription and a textured band, the slightly domed cover with conforming decoration, drum-form pedestal and vase-shaped knop, surmounted by the cast figure of a warrior supporting a shield pricked with a coat-of-arms, marked on rim and cover, maker's mark on cover partly obscured

The arms are those of Hillersdon of Cullompton, Devon.

The Hillersdon family, Cullompton, Devon, then by descent to,
Lady Mary Morrison (1587-1639), daughter and co-heir of Baptist Hicks, Viscount Campden (1551-1629), wife of Sir Charles Morrison, 1st Baronet of Cassiobury (1587-1628).
Donated by Lady Mary Morrison to St. Mary's Church, Watford, Hertfordshire in 1618.
