At Leroy’s. c.1927.

Celebrated as a highly-regarded caricaturist during the 1920s in New York City -- where he had moved in 1923 at the young age of nineteen -- Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias was known for his humorous and biting satires of the city’s social and political elite, and observations of Harlem’s vibrant social life. With the support of leading New Yorkers, Frank Crowninshield and Carl Van Vechten, Covarrubias became a contributor to magazines for the social set such as Vanity Fair, Vogue, and the New Yorker. This stylish suitor and his paramour are seated at the popular Harlem nightclub Leroy's, described by Count Basie as ‘mainly an uptown club for uptown people.’ An alternate version of the same dashing duo appears in Covarrubias’ Negro Drawings, 1927, plate 42. Basie, Good Morning Blues, 68. Although uncomfortable to both viewers at the time and today, he viewed his works not as ‘satire’ but as accurate portrayals of the world he inhabited at that point in time.
