A fine copy of the first edition of what Waugh considered to be his best work. Davis 25. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt; original dust-jacket with ‘Daily Mail Book of the Month’ wrap-around band (lower panel faintly soiled, lower edge with a few tiny nicks). Provenance: Juta’s Bookshop (Cape Town bookseller’s ticket on front pastedown).

Original blue-green cloth, spine titled in gilt (extremities faintly rubbed, upper edge and spine sunned); original dust-jacket (fine condition with only the faintest of abrasions at head of spine); housed in modern cloth clamshell box. Provenance: authorial presentation inscription dated Christmas 1954, to: – Frances Donaldson (1907-1994, British writer and biographer of Waugh; bookplate on front free endpaper).

Provenance: authorial presentation inscription dated November 1st 1963, with limitation crossed out, and inscribed: – ‘For Bridget’.
