A group of seven volumes, comprising:

WAUGH, Evelyn (1903-1966). Brideshead Revisited. The Sacred and Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder. London: Chapman & Hall Ltd., 1945.
First UK trade edition. Davis 19. Octavo. Original red-pink cloth, spine lettered in gilt (slightly cocked, head- and tailcap lightly bruised); original dust-jacket (extremities soiled, a few tiny chips and closed tears, most heavily affecting head and foot of backstrip).

– Helena. London: Chapman & Hall, [1950].
A fine copy of the first edition of what Waugh considered to be his best work. Davis 25. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt; original dust-jacket with ‘Daily Mail Book of the Month’ wrap-around band (lower panel faintly soiled, lower edge with a few tiny nicks). Provenance: Juta’s Bookshop (Cape Town bookseller’s ticket on front pastedown).

– Tactical Exercise. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1954.
Authorial presentation copy of this first edition of short stories, for which there is no British equivalent. Davis 29. Octavo. Original blue-green cloth, spine titled in gilt (extremities faintly rubbed, upper edge and spine sunned); original dust-jacket (fine condition with only the faintest of abrasions at head of spine); housed in modern cloth clamshell box. Provenance: authorial presentation inscription dated Christmas 1954, to: – Frances Donaldson (1907-1994, British writer and biographer of Waugh; bookplate on front free endpaper).

– Wine in Peace and War. London: Saccone & Speed Limited, [1947].
First edition limited to 100 copies, numbered and signed by the author. Davis 22. Octavo. Number 12 of 100, 2 colour-printed decorative plates by Rex Whistler. Original burgundy sheep, titles and device to upper cover, and titles to spine, all stamped in gilt (extremities faintly rubbed, otherwise a fine copy).

– Basil Seal Rides Again Or The Rake’s Regress. London: Chapman & Hall, 1963.
First edition limited to 750 copies; authorial presentation copy. Davis 35. Quarto. Colour-printed frontispiece by Kathleen Hale, title and dedication printed in blue and black (ink spelling correction to p.15). Original blue cloth, upper cover and spine stamped in gilt, top edge gilt, blue endpapers. Provenance: authorial presentation inscription dated November 1st 1963, with limitation crossed out, and inscribed: – ‘For Bridget’.

Authorial presentation copy of this first edition. Davis 12. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt (extremities rubbed, upper cover stained); original dust-jacket (lightly rubbed, soiled and stained, spine sunned, a few tiny chips). Provenance: authorial presentation inscription dated 1936 to: – E.A. Chapman-Andrews O.B.E (British diplomat in Ethiopia).

First edition limited to 110 copies, numbered and signed by the author, with an original manuscript leaf of the work bound in. Davis 6. Octavo. Number 13 of 110 copies. Frontispiece and six plates. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, decorative pictorial endpapers (extremities soiled, spine darkened); housed in modern quarter morocco clamshell box.
