Original blue boards, spine lettered in gilt, decorative cartographic endpapers (extremities rubbed, corners bumped, stains to covers and spine, spine faded); original price-clipped dust-jacket (extremities rubbed, spine faded, lower cover lightly soiled, some chips, creases and small closed tears). Provenance: Agatha Christie (1890-1976, famed detective fiction author) and Max Mallowan (1904-1978, prominent British archaeologist and Christie’s husband, the pair were neighbours and friends of the author; authorial presentation inscription to front free endpaper, dated 1944).

First edition, presentation copy. Sole printing. One of approximately 50 copies. Octavo. Single quire sewn, self wrappers printed in black (very lightly dust-soiled); modern green cloth portfolio and matching quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: two authorial presentation inscriptions to upper wrapper: ‘Seasonable wishes Aldous Huxley’ and ‘There is a grammatical mistake in one of the French pieces. Alcove should be feminine – quite rightly! Aldous Huxley New York May 1926’.
