CHARLES I (1600-1649) BINDING — PONTANUS, Johannes Isaac (1571–1639).

Historiae Gelricae libri 14. Harderwijk: Nicolaes van Wieringen for Johannes Jansson, 1639.

First edition of a monumental history of Gelderland finely bound for Charles I of England in black morocco and richly gilt. The binding, with its rich semé of small tools, is fairly typical of the most sumptuous bindings made for Charles I’s library; see British library database of bindings shelfmark c83i7 for a binding of a work from 1638 which has a very similar semé of gilt tools and an identical arms block. Foot gives 16 variants for arms blocks made for Charles I with this as SRA III. Such a fine binding could indicate a presentation copy. In 1621 Pontanus was asked to complete the history of Guelderland which had been started by Paulus Merula and Johannes Luntius for which the State made available 956 guilders to acquire chronicles and histories from Brabant, Cleves, Flanders, Utrecht and Julich. It was also recommended that Pontanus should have access to the archives of the regional aristocratic families. USTC 1026711; Foot, Studies in the History of Bookbinding, Aldershot, 1993, p. 341.
