DOWSON, Ernest (1867-1900)
Decorations: in Verse and Prose. London: Leonard Smithers, 1899.
First edition, inscribed by the publisher to the Australian artist Charles Conder in memory of the author’s death. Dowson's life was tragic. In 1894 his father died, and his mother committed suicide six months later. Dowson himself was consumptive, alcoholic, and debt-ridden. The dedication by Smithers to Charles Conder dated April 1900 was made shortly after Dowson’s death; he had at last succumbed to the tuberculosis he had suffered from for many years on 23 February. Conder was a key figure in the Heidelberg School of art in Australia. He left Australia in 1890, moving first to Britain, then Paris for extended periods, where he befriended Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, who painted his portrait and featured him in at least two of his Moulin Rouge works. This is also undoubtedly where he met Dowson who was in Paris, at the printer Smithers's behest, translating works from the French. Conder became closely linked to the aesthetic movement. Lasner 219.

Small quarto (192 x 145mm). Title printed in red and black. Original Japanese vellum, gilt stamped to a design by Althea Gyles, her monogram on lower side, untrimmed (spine a little darkened, rubbed at head and tail, sides slightly soiled, edges a little rubbed); custom folding box. Provenance: Charles Conder (inscription on endpaper: 'To Charles Conder in memory of our dead friend the author. Leonard Smithers. April 1900') — Michael Holland (armorial bookplate) — Barry Humphries (1934-2023; bookplate).
