East Anglian School
An unrecorded leaf from the ‘Hungerford Hours’, in Latin, illuminated manuscript on vellum [England (East Anglia), c. 1320–40].
A representative of the famed ‘East Anglian School’ of illumination, to which some of the supreme English manuscripts belong, including the Luttrell, Peterborough, Gorleston, Ormesby, and Macclesfield Psalters.

c. 165 x 100mm. 17 lines, the text comprising Psalms 122:3–124:2 (‘Quia multum […] in seculum’), doubtless from Sext in the Hours of the Virgin, each psalm with a three-line illuminated foliate initial from which springs a bar border nearly the full height of the page, each verse with a flourished initial and an illuminated line-filler, with 17th(?)-century quire signature ‘f’ (some stains, smudges, and loss of pigment or gold, the decoration somewhat cropped at the fore- and upper edges, as on other leaves of the manuscript).

Provenance:
(1) Doubtless made in East Anglia, probably for a member of the Patteshull family, with their heraldic arms on several other leaves.
(2) Owned by a family member or close friend of Robert Lord Hungerford (d. 1459) and his wife Margaret née Botreaux (d. 1478), with their deaths commemorated in the calendar.
(3) Alan Thomas and Charles Ede, acquired by the end of 1969, and dismembered by them.
(4) Colker MS 215; acquired in 1972 from Maggs.
