Two early-17th-century works on obstetrics in a single volume, including the rare first edition in English of Guillemeau's De l'heureux accouchement des femmes (originally published in 1609). This work describes the care of women during pregnancy, labour, delivery, and postpartum periods, including natural and difficult labour cases, diseases affecting women and infants, and midwife duties. Bound with this is the rare English edition of the first practical handbook for midwives. This translation by the physician Thomas Raynalde is based on Richard Jonas' translation of a Latin edition of Roesslin's Der swagern Frauwen und hebammen Rosegarten (1513). ESTC S103545 & S113417.
Two works in one volume, small quarto (183 x 126mm). First work: two-parts in one. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces, initials and illustrations in the text (title with some stains and fore-edge and upper corner repaired and strengthened, light browning, stains and minor chips to edges); second work: title within elaborate architectural woodcut border, text mostly in Black letter, 9 pages of woodcut illustrations, woodcut head- and tail-pieces, and initials (one leaf of woodcuts [H6] with long repaired horizonal tear and strengthened at fore-edge, some staining, final few leaves with minor wear and marginal repairs not affecting text). 20th-century half calf, marbled boards, spine in compartments with raised bands (slight wear to spine and paper shelf mark at head). Provenance: Obstetrical Society of London (circular ink stamp on title, divisional title and final text leaf of first work and verso of title and final text leaf of second work) — Royal Society of Medicine (ink stamp on preliminary blank).
