Provenance

The Cornaro family, presumably Venice, according to the 1773 sale catalogue.

Don José Agustín de Llano y de la Cuadra, 1st Marqués de Llano (1722-1794), by whom sold,

Anonymous sale [‘Property of a Nobleman… at the Court of Parma’]; Christie’s, London, 4 February 1773 [=2nd day], lot 73, as ‘Rubens [...] Holy Family, Virgin, Child sleeping, and Joseph, and in part of the back ground a fine landscape, one of his most elegant and best painted easel pieces, the colouring perfect, and the characters less heavy than usual. It was done for the Cornaro family, whilst he resided in Italy; the figures as big as life’ (20 gns. to Capt. Baillie).

Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive of Plassey (1725-1774), circa 1773-4, and by descent at Powis Castle, Powys, Wales, to the following,

Mervyn Horatio Herbert, Viscount Clive and 17th Lord Darcy de Knayth (1904-1943), Styche Hall, nr. Market Drayton, and by descent.
