JEAN-BAPTISTE GREUZE (1725-1805), A GIRL AT A PARAPET, OIL ON CANVAS

What truth! What a variety of tones... those blond curls, scattered over the forehead, all dishevelled, you want to tuck them back under the bonnet, they are so light and true ... A good thick canvas fichu over the neck and arranged as it should be... Monsieur Drouais, come here, do you see this child? (D. Diderot, 'Le salon de 1765', Diderot Œuvres Complètes, Paris, 1984, XIV, p. 187).

One would be forgiven for thinking that with these words Denis Diderot (1713-1784) was inciting François-Hubert Drouais (1727-1775) to look at the present painting, whose delicate execution and graceful simplicity of composition characterise the 'expressive heads' painted by Greuze (1725-1805) from the 1760s onwards. In fact, the great art critic refers to Une petite fille qui tient un petit capucin de bois, now in the National Gallery of Ireland (Dublin, inv. NGI.803), but the same naturalism marks the Jeune fille au parapet.

Painted with creamy brushstrokes that reproduce the thick folds of her bodice and the fabric of her dress and hat, the child's face is bathed in golden light while shadows gently envelop her frail body. Greuze's effortless mastery of anatomy, here combined with his deep understanding of human emotions, seemed to the eighteenth century public something entirely new and remarkable, more authentic and insightful than the works of any of his contemporaries.
