LAWRENCE, David Herbert (1885-1930)
Lady Chatterley's Lover. Florence: Privately Printed at the Tipografia Giuntina, 1928
First edition. number 353 of 1,000 copies signed by the author. Lawrence faced numerous obstacles in publishing Lady Chatterley's Lover, ultimately turning to a small avant-garde publisher, Tipografia Guintina in Florence, to circumvent British obscenity laws. Written in a remarkable five-week burst of creative energy, the novel became one of Lawrence's last great works. With the assistance of Florentine bookseller Pino Orioli, the handsome volume was then distributed from Florence. Lawrence planned to sell the one thousand numbered copies for £2 each, and sent order forms to friends in America and Europe who acted as agents in distributing copies. By December 1928, Lawrence had sold nearly all one thousand copies despite the fact that the novel was about to be suppressed in London and was stopped from entering the United States. Connolly, The Modern Movement 57; Fabes p.14; Roberts A42a.

Large octavo (228 x 165mm). Original mulberry paper boards, upper cover with Phoenix motif printed in black, white printed paper label on spine, uncut (a few chips at edges and to spine label, one corner of upper board a little worn, faint crack to upper joint); modern quarter black crushed morocco box. Provenance: G. Y. Giglioli (bookplate) – Christie’s South Kensington 30 November 2005, lot 198.
