Leopold Mozart (1719-1787)
Versuch einer gründlichen Violinschule. Augsburg: J.J. Lotter, 1756
First edition, complete with the engraved portrait frontispiece. Leopold Mozart's ‘Violin School is the first comprehensive violin textbook in the German language and is a treasure trove for research and performance practice’ (MGG). This is the first edition of the famous textbook, which 'is of a clarity that can hardly be surpassed and progresses so consistently from the simple and easy to the difficult that, viewed as a whole, it seems like a music education treatise in the sense anticipated by Pastalozzi' (Moser/Noesselt, p.60). Eitner VII, 90; Wolffheim I, 861.

Quarto (213 x 175mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece and 3 plates, letterpress and woodcut folding table of music (lacking the errata leaf found in some copies, title with large repaired chip at fore-edge, the repair running down the blank verso strengthening fore-edge, folding table fractionally trimmed just cropping into headline, with 90mm repaired tear affecting a couple of clefs and numbers, and old paper repair to central horizontal creasefold, the whole with some very minor faint spotting and staining). Modern half vellum (extremities faintly rubbed, typed German auctioneer’s label pasted onto front cover). Provenance: old inscription removed from title but with show-through ink in blank margin of following leaf.

[Sold with:] MOZART, Wolfgang Amadeus (1756-1791). ‘5 Thema mit Varationen für das Pianoforte.’ From: Saemmtliche Werke für das Clavier mit und ohne Begleitung…34. Heft. Vienna: Tobias Haslinger, [c.1833]. Second issue with variant title. Oblong quarto (256 x 337mm). Pp. 51, engraved throughout, plate number S:u:C: 2734 (very faint occasional browning and spotting). Original green paper backed wrappers, upper wrapper with engraved title within decorative landscape vignette (lightly soiled, tiny repaired tear to fore-edge of upper wrapper, extremities lightly rubbed). And sold with another 20th century work.
