Valeur estimée

[Ludwig II (1845-1886), King of Bavaria]
Nine notebooks of an official or courtier of Ludwig II and Prince Regent Luitpold, most relating to royal building projects, [c.1880s-1890s]
In various hands, pen and pencil, mostly in the form of brief memoranda lightly cancelled. Nine notebooks, 95 x 60mm - 135 x 80mm, not all completely filled, leather bindings (one lacking binding).

Notebooks from the court of Ludwig II, relating to his famously extravagant building projects. The memoranda relate chiefly to Bavarian royal buildings, including the castle of Falkenstein, the Munich Residence, Hohenschwangau and Chiemsee, as well as to interior decoration, with notes of artists and artisans, works of art, books, plants, measurements, addresses, deliveries, etc; the notes are mostly very brief, but occasionally comprise full texts of orders or letters. Frequent references to Versailles, Louis XIV and Louis XV make clear the importance of 18th century French influence (e.g. 'The avenue at Chiemsee should be as broad as at Versailles'). Ludwig II's court secretary Lorenz von Düfflipp is frequently mentioned. There are occasional brief references to Richard Wagner (e.g. 'Brief an R. Wagner').
