NICOLAS DE LARGILLIERRE, HALF-LENGTH PORTRAIT OF ÉLISABETH-CHARLOTTE OF ORLÉANS, CALLED MADEMOISELLE DE CHARTRES, OIL ON CANVAS

The daughter of Philip I, Duke d’Orleans (1640-1701), brother of Louis XIV (1638-1715), and Elisabeth-Charlotte of Bavaria (1652-1722), Princess Palatine, the young Elisabeth-Charlotte d’Orleans (1676-1744), granddaughter of king Louis XIII, who later became known as "Mademoiselle de Chartres", is the royal model in Nicolas de Largillierre’s painting. Depicted in three-quarter-length, the young girl holds up a bunch of grapes that she appears to have just lifted out of the basket before her.

The flowing drapery and rosy complexion of the sitter in this lively portrait are characteristic of the early career of the artist. Trained in Antwerp in the studio of the painter Antoine Goubeau (1616-1698) and later in London under Peter Lely (1618-1680), he acquired a taste for bold usage of colour and extravagant drapery; these predilections are perceptible here in the model's costume and in the still life – particularly the bunches of grapes.

The young princess, aged about ten in this portrait, posed for Largillierre in the early 1680s on the painter’s return from London. The next few years were to be decisive for him: by the end of the decade, he had established himself as one of the most sought-after painters of the nobility and the upper middle classes.

Another version of this painting by Largillierre, formerly given to the studio of Pierre Mignard (1612-1695), has been part of the collection at the Château de Versailles since 1833 (Île-de-France, inv. no. MV 7387). The Versailles painting is similar in size to another version in the collections of the Prado Museum (Madrid, inv. no. P002351), which also holds the pendant, the portrait of her brother, Philippe II d’Orleans (1674-1723) (inv. no. P002288).
