Around 2014, the Tuareg people of north Africa found an odd-looking, football-sized rock deep within the Sahara Desert. Analysis and classification by scientists showed this rock to be a rare type of stony-iron meteorite called a mesosiderite. These meteorites are mixtures of nickel-rich iron and the silicate mineral called pyroxene. Mesosiderite slices of this size and quality are difficult to find.
